In the Studio
My studio is in the Bridewell Studios in Liverpool (the Bridewell was a Victorian police station, the picture above was taken in one of the old cells).
I make stoneware pots on a momentum wheel I made from reclaimed wood, based on a design kindly shared by Nic Collins. My influences are medieval English pottery, Bernard Leach and his school and traditional Japanese and Korean pottery.
I use simple glazes made from washed hard-wood ashes, granite dusts and clay. Most of the pots I make are to be used on a daily basis or on special occasions.
Five plates, 12" dia: white slip; 'eggshell' beach ash glaze.
Small jugs, mugs, desert bowls and noodle bowls.
Coffee mug: oak-ash/granite & marble worktop sawdust/clay glaze.
Tea bowl with heavy grit: wood-fired; beech ash 'nuka' glaze with incident oak ash run.
Jug with pressed pellets, 10 1/2": beech ash 'nuka' glaze with holly ash rim and holly ash runs.
Large tankard: inside and rim down to handle ledge - soft 'eggshell' beech ash glaze; outside - oak ash based glaze.
